Other forms of art in 1977..

The Musical movement in 1977 was strong. Punk Rock was born.
Punk rock is a type of rock music that developed in the late 1970's in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Finding its roots in garage rock, Punk rock responded with a blacklash against the excess of 1970's rock.
This music was fast, edgy but was typically composed of short songs with stripped down instruments. The message was usually political and anti-estabilshment.

The movement was about personal expression, Do it Yourself ethics. Down with the Man!
Many punk bands produced their own recordings and sold their own music, even distributing it themselves.

Bnds such as thes Ramones in NYC, the Sex Pistols and The Clash,in London, were recognized as the premier bands of this movement.
1977 saw punk rock spreading around the world, and it took over the culture in the United Kingdom.
For the most part, punk took root in local scenes that tended to reject association with the mainstream.
A subculture emerged which was distingusihed by particular styles of clothing and adornment that respented the anti-establishment ideologies of the music and times.

Neo-Expressionism and it's artists

So, as stated Neo-expressionism was in reaction to the conceptual and minimalist movement of the 1950's, 60's andinto the earlier 1970's. An example of a minimalist painting from this time for comparsion reasons will be shared.

Pablo Piscasso has been credited with being a large icon for the Neo-expressionism movement. His later works in particular between 1968 up until his death in 1971 served as the jumping point from which many Neo-expressionist artists took inspiration.

Neo-Expressionist art can be described as raw, rough, agressive and even violent.
An example of Pablo Picasso's later work includes the
Rembrandtesque Figure and Cupid (1969)

Georg Baselitz, is a German painter and one of the premier and first Neo-expressionist artists. In the 1970s, Baselitz was part of a group of Neo-Expressionist German artists, focusing on deformation, the power of subject and the vibrancy of the colors. He became famous for his upside-down images. He is seen as a revolutionary painter as he draws the viewer’s attention to his works by making them think and sparking their interest. The subject of the paintings were not as important as the painting's visual inerest.

In 1977 Baselitz made his first linocuts. The pliable linoleum surface allows for a more fluid lines. He worked on a large scale, and used oil paints, blurring the boundaries of his artwork. His choices in subject matter usually were graphic. The method he utilizes is layering paints atop one another in a gradual, unplanned manner. Each layer of paint obliterating the next.

High Art versus Low Art

First, high art will often gain a complex variety of responses toward it. The art includes a mixture of complex and formal properties. High art helps individuals understand aspects of the world around them.
High art tends to be cross-cultural, it can be enjoyed by people from all parts of the world and it is not simply limited by the nature of its composition.
Art of this caliber tends to be timeless, it's importance does not fade with time. Works of high art are also individual.
Low art is considered more anoymous and fading. It is often the borrowings of high art, this can be found in many forms. And then there is the "class" divide, that only highly educated individuals develope a love of high art. Only the educated could possibly grasp the complex meanings and semblance of properties behind high works of art.
Educated individuals often come to be associated with wealth. Wealth in turn opens up the world of high art to them, in both accessing and viewing and buying  of this art.

Now, as it pertains to the Year 1977. One art movement of the time was Neo-expressionism. This style developed in Germany. This type of art developed as a reaction against the minimalist and conceptual movements of the 1970's. Neo-expressionists created works based on history, mythology, and eroticism. Extremely dramatic themes with vivd colors and wild brushwork were the chief characteristics of this genre. The artists did not wish to make realistic representations, but they wanted to convey intense emotions through their paintings and sculptures.

This style was influenced bt german-expressionist painters, such as Emil Nolde, George Grosz and artists such as James Ensor. These particular artists came to be called the "New Wild Ones" because their style was hotly criticized, but also lauded as an re-emergence of traditional themes of expression in European art, after years of American dominance.

Women became segregated by this movement. Many female artists were banned from its exhibitions.

The Year 1977

1997 was a year of emerging change. The first apple computer went on sale. Jimmy Carter was elected president. Now, I am not sure if you know much about Jimmy Carter, but he aspired to make America "competent and compassionate." and to be responsive to the needs of the people.
This was also an era of rising inflation and mounting energy costs. Carter worked hard to reduce unemployment and inflation.  Back then, there was a clear message that Americans had to reduce their oil consumption as well. The New York city blackout occured, and the World Trade center is New York was completed. In France, the last execution by guillotine occured and the noble peace prize is awarded to Amnesty International.

Star Wars opened up in film theaters.

In Popular culture begins the development of punk music, from groups like the Ramones, Iggy Pop's ,Clash, Elvis Costello & Sex Pistols

Elvis Presley died of a heart attack.

There are some of the events which happened during this time period. All contributing to Art within this year which I will explore in my next post.
